2023 gnlc 11th Doctoral Symposium

The 2023 GNLC 11th Doctoral Symposium for current students in doctoral programs and doctoral faculty took on February 11, 2023 at Emory Nursing Learning Center, Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Atlanta, GA. This year’s theme was on the topic of, Charting Innovative Paths for Nursing Research & Scholarship.

  • 142 doctoral students, faculty, and GNLC leaders attended this year’s GNLC 11th Annual Doctoral Symposium

  • Opening Plenary Speaker – Shannon N. Zenk, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN – The NINR Strategic Plan

  • Closing Plenary Speaker – Tim Cunningham, RN, DrPH, MSN, FAAN – The Case for Playfulness in Your Doctoral Journey

  • There were 17 podium presentations and 39 poster presentations given by doctoral students throughout Georgia

  • Students and Faculty participated in a networking session at lunch where they discussed doctoral program developments and met new faculty from universities throughout Georgia

SPEAKERS

Shannon Zenk, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN

National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) Director, Shannon N. Zenk, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, is a leading nurse researcher whose research focuses on social inequities and health with the goal of identifying effective, multilevel approaches to improve health and eliminate racial/ethnic and socioeconomic health disparities. Dr. Zenk will speak on NINR’s New Strategic Plan.

Dr. Zenk was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2013, received the President’s Award from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research in 2018, and was inducted into the International Nurse Researchers Hall of Fame in 2019. She has spent time as a visiting scholar in Rwanda and Australia. She earned her bachelor’s in nursing, magna cum laude, from Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington; her master’s degrees in public health nursing and community health sciences from UIC; and her doctorate in health behavior and health education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Tim Cunningham, RN, DrPH, MSN, FAAN, is the vice president of practice and innovation for Emory Healthcare and adjunct associate professor at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. He also serves as the Co-Chief Well-Being Officer for the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Office of Well-Being (EmWELL).

His research and publications focus on methods to advocate for well-being while measuring the impacts of specific wellness-related practices. Dr. Cunningham’s co-authored book, “Self-Care for New and Student Nurses” (2020), examines ways to keep well-being relevant for the individual as well as for health systems. 

Clinically, Dr. Cunningham’s background is as an emergency/trauma nurse and he’s worked at multiple level-one trauma centers in the U.S. while also serving in humanitarian crises such as the West Africa Ebola outbreak, post 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and in the ongoing humanitarian crisis on the Myanmar (Burma)/Bangladesh border.
