2024 gnlc 12th Doctoral Symposium

The 2024 GNLC 12th Doctoral Symposium for current students in doctoral programs and doctoral faculty took on February 10, 2024 at Valdosta State University, Valdosta, GA. This year’s theme was on the topic of, Healthcare Policies, Systems, and Access.

  • 142 doctoral students, faculty, and GNLC leaders attended this year’s GNLC 12th Annual Doctoral Symposium

  • Opening Plenary Speaker – Dr. Tate Hinkle, MD, MPH, FAAFP – Rural Health Equity: Creating Sustainable Solutions

  • Closing Plenary Speaker – Randy Smith, NEA-C, MS, BSN, RN – The Nursing Workforce and Future of Hospital Nursing

  • There were 17 podium presentations and 39 poster presentations given by doctoral students throughout Georgia

  • Students and Faculty participated in a networking session at lunch where they discussed doctoral program developments and met new faculty from universities throughout Georgia

SPEAKERS

Dr. Tate Hinkle, MD, MPH, FAAFP

Dr. Hinkle is a family physician in rural Alabama who is passionate about health policy, especially as it relates to rural healthcare, medical education, quality and value-based care, and using data to improve care. Dr. Tate is helping practices, rural hospitals, RHCs, and FQHCs navigate the transition to value-based care. Dr. Tate has wide-ranging experiences in national, state, and local organized medicine, giving him a broad view of healthcare challenges at all levels. He is bringing his perspective and experiences of healthcare and health policy to improve care delivery and medical education to achieve equitable and quality outcomes for communities.

Presentation: Rural Health Equity: Creating Sustainable Solutions

Randy Smith obtained the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Valdosta State University and the Master of Science in Nursing and Health Systems Management from The Ohio State University. He is a certified Nurse Executive Advanced (NEA-C) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Mr. Smith is known for building interprofessional teams, inspiring change, and his collaborative leadership style. His leadership history includes a diverse background in union and non-unionized environments, multi-hospital systems, military, pediatric, and academic medical center settings. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Nursing Officer (COO/CNO) for South Georgia Medical Center, a not-for-profit regional referral health system comprised of a main campus and three satellite campuses that serve 400,000 residents in a 15-county medical service area covering South Georgia and North Florida.
